APRON SUPERSTITIONS
"The woman's apron was the subject of more folk beliefs and superstitions than most
other pieces of clothing. If a woman wet her apron in washing, her husband would
be a drunkard, but if a hole was burned in the front of the apron there would be
trouble and sorrow. If the hole was burned in the back of the apron, however, trouble
and sorrow were past. Accidentally putting on one's apron wrong side out is lucky,
but turning it will bring accident or misfortune. If a horse on the farmstead had
sprained a leg, the best remedy was to tie a stolen apron string around the affected
leg. It was also felt that eggs would hatch better if carried to the stable by a woman
in her apron" (Gehret) .
