Student Art Activity
Mosaics
The veranda floor at Copshaholm was built with small tiles called mosaics.
Wealthy Romans decorated their floors and walls with mosaics. Small pieces of glass
and stone were set in plaster in beautiful patterns.
Your students can make their own mosaic designs using pieces of colored paper.
Step #1
Use a square piece of white paper (12 inches).
Step #2
Make a color drawing. Students may wish to draw a portrait, a scene, or a decorative
design.
Step #3
Cut up the drawing in small pieces (1/4 inch is good)-triangles or squares work best.
Use a ruler to make the edges straight.
Step #4
Glue the small pieces of paper side by side on top of a clean piece of paper. Work on
one area at a time.
