Indiana Academic Standards
     High School United States History

At the high school level, theIndiana Academic Standards for Social Studies provide standards for
specific courses that focus on one or more of the five content areas that make up the core of the social
studies curriculum: History, Civics and Government, Geography, Economics, and Individuals, Society,
and Culture (psychology, sociology, and anthropology). One of these content areas is the major focus
of the course while the other areas play supporting roles or become completely integrated into the
subject. Supporting content areas are indicated in parenthesis. Each high school course continues to
develop skills for thinking, inquiry and research, and participation in a democratic society.
These academic standards were passed by the Education Roundtable July 25, 2001, and the Indiana
Department of Education passed these standards August 2, 2001.
The goal of social studies education is the development of informed, responsible citizens who
participate effectively in our democracy. The Academic Standards for Social Studies addresses this
goal by integrating a strong knowledge base with the skills for inquiry, thinking, and participation.
The following pages list the social studies academic standards that this curriculum packet fulfills.
