The total number of military and veterans burial places in the United States is unknown
because there are numerous veterans’ plots in private and non-Federal public
cemeteries. In 1991, 70 percent of the markers provided by the Federal government to
mark new gravesites were delivered to private or State cemeteries, and the remainder
to nation cemeteries.
