Winter Scene

The snow is thick on the ground in this circa 1890 photograph taken at the corner of South Scott Street and West Division Street, now Western Avenue. The taller of the two boys appears to be wearing ice skates. A man holding a flag stands between the boys and a small shed. He may have been the “crossing guard,” an individual who used a flag to signal trains to stop for pedestrians.
