Notre Dame Astronomy Lab

Taken in the 1870s at the astronomy lab at the University of Notre Dame, this picture of Notre Dame science students shows Professor Timothy Howard, for whom Howard Street in South Bend is named, peering through the telescope. The telescope was a gift to Notre Dame from France’s Napoleon III, who had met Fr. Joseph Carrier while he was in France purchasing scientific instruments for the University. Donated by James Sullivan.
