This circa 1926 photo shows the Notre Dame football team at the South Shore station, which was then located at the corner of LaSalle and Michigan Streets in downtown South Bend. The team was preparing to leave for one of the many away games. Legendary Knute Rockne was the first college football coach to take his team across the country so that they could be matched up with the best teams on both the east and west coasts. During his 13-year tenure, of course, Rockne led five undefeated teams, produced 20 first-team All-Americans, and had a lifetime winning percentage of .881—still the highest among all college and professional football coaches.
